Gynecomasty is the excessive growth of nipple gland in a male body. Physiologically it occurs temporarily during puberty and then disappears. It can also occur at any given time in a man's life, affecting one or both nipples. Gynecomasty can be gland based, fat based or mixed. Fat based gynecomasty can result from obesity, or from hereditary reasons. Other reasons for gynecomasty can be endocrynological in origin, liver problems or side effects after some medications.
The procedure of gynecomasty has the effect of lessening the gland area. An incision is made in a half-circle around the nipple and parts of the excessively grown gland are removed. With fat based gynecomasty a liposuction procedure gives great effect and does not leave any traces of the procedure. The mixed method considers both of these techniques used during the procedure.
In the case of gland removal, drains are left in the body for the period of 48 hours after the procedure.
The stitches are removed after 10 days, until then a pressure bandage is placed around the chest. The scars after the procedure are practically invisible. Swelling, bruising and pain might occur after the procedure and last for a few weeks. The final result can be seen after a few months(skin contraction time).
